Stable Time Increment and Mass Scaling in Explicit Analyses

In simulations using explicit dynamics, controlling the time step is one of the most important problems: too big a time step and the solution is unstable, too small and the calculation takes too much computer time.

  • How do we find a good balance?
  • Can we artificially speed up the solution?
  • Are the software tools good enough to help the user?
