Product Digitalization: Towards the Design of Digital Twins

This paper was produced for the 2019 NAFEMS World Congress in Quebec Canada

Resource Abstract

Enabled by the advancements in model-driven engineering, design engineers are adopting a novel product digitalization workflow that ensures the delivery of both physical hardware and its digitalized copy. This article highlights the motivation for product digitalization as an enabler for digital twins. The business opportunities of digital twins, as well as the impact of product digitalization on efficient product development, support the adoption of product digitalization for hardware design and engineering. Various attributes of product digitalization are discussed across three main categories, namely; model attributes, design and functional attributes, and platform attributes. Finally, a case study of Latch Mandrel digitalization is presented along with its benefit in product design and optimization, fleet management, failure investigation, and health monitoring.
