Advances in Material Modeling for High Velocity Impacts on Composites

This paper was produced for the 2019 NAFEMS World Congress in Quebec Canada

Resource Abstract

This paper describes research activities that were conducted to implement advanced non-linear models for composite material in the LS-Dyna software. Inter and intra-laminar damage models based on Continuum Damage Mechanics, known as the Cachan models (Ladevèze and Allix), have been programmed in user routines. Comparison to SAMCEF for quasi-static problems validate the implementation. Delay effect, specific smeared crack models and adaptations to strain rate effect on stiffness, damage and strength have been incorporated in the original models in order to limit damage localization problems and make them reliable for high velocity impact analyses on laminated composite structures. Applications are solved to demonstrate the efficiency of the developed approach.
