Design Analysis via Simulation Aided by Reverse Engineering to Optimise Castings

This paper on "Design Analysis via Simulation Aided by Reverse Engineering to Optimise Castings" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Effective Engineering Analysis - 25-28 April 1999, Newport, Rhode Island, USA.

Summary

A production engineer normally wants drawings and surfaces in digital formats before turning complex creations into useful products to the market. This digital data is requested for computer simulation analysis to optimise products and reduce the time for trials or to make “right-first-time”. Usually the casting design initiates from 3D-CAD data and via computer solidification simulation for casting process optimisation prior to tooling. Sometimes casting re-engineering are also needed via reverse engineering process supported by 3D-scanning technology. In this cases computer simulation analysis is necessary to detect flaws and to optimise product design.
