The Finite Element Analysis of a Structural Steelwork Extended End Plate Beam-to-Column Bolted Connection

This paper on "The Finite Element Analysis of a Structural Steelwork Extended End Plate Beam-to-Column Bolted Connection" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Abstract

A materially non-linear three dimensional finite element analysis of a structural steelwork extended end plate beam-to-column bolted connection is presented in this paper. The FEA analysis, incorporating MYSTRO and LUSAS software, uses enhanced strain solid and contact gap elements to model the connection behaviour. The investigation compares results with a recently published design method that offers increased connection capacity with reduced column stiffening and introduces plastic bolt force distribution. Results of the analyses are also reported against a series of full scale rests on fabricated beam-to-column joints.
