Registration of Professional Engineers in Australia and a Model for Revised Legislation

This paper on "Registration of Professional Engineers in Australia and a Model for Revised Legislation" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Summary

The accreditation and registration of professional engineers in Australia is discussed. Only one State has full legislated regulation of the profession dating back to 1929. Case history is presented together with national competition constraints and results of surveys to make the case for revised legislation. Conditions are identified under which regulation of the whole profession as distinct from only troublesome sectors is justified.
