3D Optimization of a Cup for Hip-Prosthesis

This paper on "3D Optimization of a Cup for Hip-Prosthesis" was presented at the NAFEMS World Congress on Design, Simulation & Optimisation: Reliability & Applicability of Computational Methods - 9-11 April 1997, Stuttgart, Germany.

Abstract

The ANSYS software was used to analyze and later optimize the stresses in the cup of a hip-prosthesis made out of titanium-alloy.
The FE-analysis was conducted, after that fatigue-tests resulted in a failure in the critical area.
The FEA-model was created by using the AN SYS Preprozessor. The aim of the analysis was to reduce the stresses in the critical part. A linear static analysis was performed. Five design variables for optimization were chosen. The objective was to minimize stress and at the same time to maintain the bending stiffness of the whole part.
