Introduction to Paper

In today's world, most engineering products are designed to a greater or lesser extent with the aid of computers. Of all the techniques employed, the finite element method is the most important contributor to safety and reliable operation - and it is this realisation that prompted the formation of NAFEMS.
The reliable use of finite element methods depends equally upon the use of proven and reliable methods in validated computer programs and upon the expertise of the user. NAFEMS exists to establish standards, guidelines and accreditation procedures covering both software and people. Most of the major software suppliers are responsible people with a vested interest in marketing a sound reliable product. But there is a rapidly growing movement in the broader field of Computer-Assisted Design (CAD) to include a "finite element package" as a part of the larger system. The avowed aim of many developers is to make the analysis packages (of which FEM may be but one) as transparent as possible to users. Like it or not, the FE technique is now being offered to a wide variety of potential users who have little or no understanding of its underlying principles and limitations.
