Benchmark Tests for Elastoplastic Finite Element Analysis

This paper on "Benchmark Tests for Elastoplastic Finite Element Analysis" was presented at the International Conference on Quality Assurance and Standards in Finite Element Analysis - 13-15 May 1987, The Grand Hotel, Brighton.

Summary

The Nonlinear Working Group of NAFEMS is extending the NAFEMS activity into regions where finite element methods are used to obtain predictions of nonlinear structural behaviour. The group will eventually consider the use of finite element methods for the analysis of many different manifestations of nonlinear structural behaviour. Work in this area has begun with the development of a set of special benchmark tests specifically for elastoplastic problems. This paper describes some of these simple tests which have been designed to cater for small strain, metal plasticity in which the plastic behaviour is described by the van Mises yield criterion with an associated flow rule for planar and three-dimensional problems. Geometric nonlinearities, rate and temperature effects are excluded.
