Understanding Finite Elements

This paper on "Understanding Finite Elements" was presented at the International Conference on Quality Assurance and Standards in Finite Element Analysis - 13-15 May 1987, The Grand Hotel, Brighton.

Summary

The Finite Element method, being a numerical technique, is very different from most other subjects taught to engineers. Unlike most other subjects in the syllabus it is new and consequently the best way in which it should be taught is still evolving.
This paper offers one solution and deals with the way in which finite elements are taught to the undergraduates of mechanical engineering at the University of Manchester.
