Some Experiences of Finite Element Calculations in a European Benchmark Exercise

This paper on "Some Experiences of Finite Element Calculations in a European Benchmark Exercise" was presented at the International Conference on Quality Assurance and Standards in Finite Element Analysis - 13-15 May 1987, The Grand Hotel, Brighton.

Summary

A brief review of a benchmark exercise involving ten organisations using twelve finite element computer codes is presented. Participants were asked to calculate the long term thermo-mechanical creep behaviour of a hollow sphere subject to internal pressure. In general results agree fairly closely with theoretical solutions but significant differences occur at late times. Wide variations in computing efficiency are indicated, although these cannot be reliably qualified.
