Solver Selection

by Jose Alves

The table below identifies which solver techniques may be most appropriate for various types of electromagnetic problems, based on characteristics of the simulation such as the electrical size in terms of wavelength, resonant properties, and the types of materials involved. This is an initial recommendation for a suitable method, though other methods may also be considered.

Before selecting a solver technique, consider the following characteristics of the simulation:

  • Electrical length measured in wavelengths,
  • The impact and scale of geometric details,
  • Contrast in materials within the problem domain,
  • Transient responses, including non-linear effects, compared to just static responses,
  • Multi-physics factors, such as the time scales of various effects.
