Declination of the V&V approach – examples of application to the mechanical methods on turbine engines component

S. Mosset and F. Comte presented a detailed overview of the Verification and Validation (V&V) methodologies applied to mechanical methods for turbine engine components at Safran Aircraft Engines. Emphasizing the critical role of these components in flight safety, the presentation outlined the rigorous V&V processes necessary to ensure their structural integrity. The presentation was structured into three main sections. The first part discussed the development and validation of simulation methodologies at Safran Aircraft Engines, adhering to various V&V and Uncertainty Quantification standards like ASME V&V 10 and EASA CM-S-014 Issue 01. The approach was inspired by Technology Readiness Levels. In the second section, the focus shifted to V&V for ductile fracture simulation in turbine disks under overspeed conditions. This part detailed the entire process from the conceptual model to the computerized model, including extensive testing at various scales to ensure representativity and complexity. The methodology involved model identification on specimen tests, verification of computerized models, and validation at different scales. The final part of the presentation delved into 3D fracture mechanics simulations, crucial for damage tolerance in aircraft engines. This section highlighted the necessity for a robust and predictive crack propagation simulation tool, detailing the verification of the computerized model and the extensive experimental validation for components of increasing representativeness. Concluding, the presenters emphasized the significance of safety in the aeronautical industry and the need for credible simulations. They highlighted the maturity growth of simulation methodologies based on the TRL approach and the importance of multiscale validation. The presentation underscored ongoing efforts for further developments and validations to broaden the applicability domains of these methodologies.
