Stability and artificial reflections across scales in multi-scale dynamic schemes for elastic wave propagation

The NAFEMS Eastern European 2020 Virtual Conference took place on the 23rd and 24th of September 2020. The event gave participants access to high level presentations in the field of structural mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, electromagnetics and discrete element methods.

Resource Abstract

In this paper we analyze the stability and reflection/transmission properties of a dynamic hybrid multi-scale scheme for elastic wave propagation. The numerical issues of stability and reflections – characteristic of errors – often arise in multi-scale schemes owing to coupling different scales of space and time. These numerical phenomena affect the accuracy and consistency of results, and their analysis is crucial to achieve convergence in any multi-scale scheme. In this paper we analyze a hybrid multi-scale scheme coupling two different dynamic transient models of elastic wave propagation, namely, the Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA) and Cellular Automata for Elastodynamics (CAFE) using unique approaches.
