Fuel Tank Sloshing: Digital Modelling with Mesh-less CFD

The highly competitive nature of motorsports drives designers to seekout every possible advantage, no matter how slight, over their rivals. One potential area for improvement lies in reducing fuel sloshing and optimizing fuel extraction from the tank.

In this article, a new approach to fuel tank optimization is proposed. It aims to streamline the workflow by significantly reducing computational time compared to traditional finite volume method computational fluid dynamics (FVM CFD) tools. Additionally, the proposed approach explores the use of free solid bodies within the tank to mitigate fuel sloshing.

For these applications, conventional CFD tools employing the FVM approachare computationally expensive and time-consuming. By utilizing Moving Particle Simulation (MPS), this proposed method offers a more efficient solution by employing a Lagrangian formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations, as opposed to the Eulerian approach used in FVM CFD.
