Your Referees

It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure the consent of at least one referee before their application is submitted.

When completing their application form, candidates are required to indicate which referee should be contacted in relation to each technical area where the candidate is seeking certification. The referees will then be contacted by NAFEMS to attest that the candidate has various high level capabilities.

A referee is someone who can attest and vouch for your skills and simulation experience.

Referees do not need to be simulation experts but must be familiar with the candidate's work that involved analysis and simulation. Your referee could be someone in a managerial capacity in your current organisation, a chief engineer, a previous manager at another organisation or an academic professor.

Referees must be of high professional standing. For example, in Europe the professional qualification Eur. Ing., in the USA Professional Engineer / P.E. and in the UK Chartered Engineer / C.Eng, or their equivalent would be appropriate.

Referees do not need to be simulation experts but must be familiar with the candidate's work that involved analysis and simulation.

Referees must be senior to you. Your application will be rejected unless one referee is included.

Educational Qualifications

Although a degree is not mandatory, applicants must possess the foundation knowledge of a first degree or equivalent. They are generally expected to have undertaken a minimum level of further training and attendance at courses, seminars and workshops aimed at increasing general background engineering knowledge and, especially, the knowledge of the theory associated with numerical analysis and its application to practical engineering problems.

Some applicants may satisfy the pre-requisites of the underpinning knowledge required for certification through their other experience.

Professional Qualifications

Please provide details of any memberships you may have of professional bodies.

Training

Please provide details of any relevant external courses that you have attended that have contributed to your Continuing Professional Development (CPD).This may include vendor/software courses, NAFEMS training courses or any other courses undertaken.

University courses leading to the award of a formal qualification should be included in the 'Education' tab above.

Simulation Experience

PSE Certification requires applicants to demonstrate that they are competent in the Technical Areas that they have requested to be included in the scope of their certification. At the heart of the system is a requirement that these competencies have been developed in an industrial environment.

Applicants are required to record their relevant simulation experience in the application form. Each item of simulation experience should be linked to the Technical Areas in which they are seeking certification.

The information supplied in this table should be sufficient to satisfy the PSE Assessors that the competencies claimed by the applicant are reasonable in terms of "Technical Area(s)" and "level selected".

For Standard and Advanced level applications significant industrial experience is required to support a certification. PSE Certification at Standard or Advanced level cannot be made on the basis of a single project, lasting for a few weeks

Competencies Claimed

In this section, you are identifying the scope / extent of the certification that you are applying for.

The decision to apply for certification in a particular Technical Area should be based on the candidate's ability to demonstrate the high level capabilities as described in the PSE Guidance Information. These behaviours should be underpinned by substantial industrial practice.

Select the Technical Area and the level that is being claimed (Entry, Standard or Advanced). A series of statements will then appear that describe the skills and abilities that the applicant should possess in order to gain certification. The applicant is required to specify which referee they would like NAFEMS to contact to confirm that the candidate has the required skill and abilities.

A maximum of 4 Technical Areas can be assessed during the course of a normal interview. If more than 4 Technical Areas are being claimed then additional certification interviews will be required to process the full application. If you are seeking to claim more than 4 technical areas they can all be included in the one application. Candidates applying for more than 4 technical areas will be contacted by the PSE administrator to discuss which technical areas will be covered in the initial interview.

An initial PSE Certification application must contain one of the core modules (Computational Structural Mechanics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computational Electromagnetics, Multibody Dynamics).

For each Technical Area that you wish to claim, you will need to:

  1. Click to choose the Technical Area.

  2. Select the appropriate level from the three options, as detailed below.

  3. Confirm that you have an appropriate selection of competencies from those listed in the relevant Technical Area of the NAFEMS PSE Competency Tracker, see below. (Please note that it is up to you, as the applicant, to judge which of the individual competencies are required to support your application. This will form the basis of much of the questioning during your interview, at which time the assessors will be making their own judgement about the suitability of your competencies relative to the scope of certification that you have applied for).

  4. Identify which of your referees can verify the various statements that appear.

  5. Click 'Add Competency' tab to add additional Technical Areas, if appropriate.

Please note that you will be required to justify any competencies that you claim during your interview.

Competency Tracker

The PSE Competency Tracker is a comprehensive database of standard competencies in the Analysis and Simulation industry. It comprises over a thousand statements of competence, subdivided into subsets, called Technical Areas. For each area and statement of competence, a list of suggested educational resources is provided.

As an applicant, you can register to access your own account on the Competency Tracker. You are strongly advised to use this and identify which of the competence statements you feel confident apply to you. This information should then be exported to a PDF file, and uploaded in support of this application.

Obligations of a Professional Simulation Engineer

Applicants are required to confirm their willingness to abide by the obligations required of a Professional Simulation Engineer.

These obligations are:

  • complying with the NAFEMS Professional Simulation Engineer Code of Conduct

  • accepting the applicant of the NAFEMS Professional Simulation Engineer Disciplinary Procedure in the event of a complaint against them

  • co-operating with the NAFEMS Professional Simulation Engineer Disciplinary Procedure when required

Professional Simulation Engineer Applications confirm their willingness to abide to these obligations by ticking the box below

Referee Access to Information

The referees you have included will be sent a copy of your application via email, with your personal details removed (aside from your name). This will allow us to confirm that the details of your application are accurate.
