Some Failures & Studies with Lessons Learned - Buckling, Instability & Collapse

Overview

During this presentation observations on a variety of interesting failures was examined and pertinent engineering lessons highlighted. The failures briefly examined include:

  1. Buckling of a steel storage silo.
  2. Collapse and buckling of GRP storage tank roofs.
  3. Testing to failure of a flexible composite braided umbilical.
  4. Post-buckling comparison of simply-supported carbon composite plates under uniaxial compression, with various cut-out geometries.
  5. An investigation into the failure of rotationally moulded oil LLDPE storage tanks.
  6. Buckling of the leaflets in a polyurethane heart valve.

The presentation reflected on relevant simulation issues as well as engineering lessons.
