Overview

What are the major visualization challenges engineers face today?

Introduction (by Don Tolle, Comet Solutions)

Since the adoption of the graphical user interface (GUI) for engineering software starting in the 1970s, the role of visualization has become increasingly critical to advancing the effective use of performance simulation/CAE tools not only by highly skilled analysis experts but also by design engineers and occasional “consumers” of product information such as program managers, systems engineers, marketing and supply chains. With the ever increasing amount of digital prototyping that is becoming a core product development function across almost all manufacturing industries, it has never been more critical for simulation results to be available and “consumable” by the entire organization in order to provide business impact starting early in conceptual design and continuing throughout the product development lifecycle.

Today’s presentation will provide an overview of the CAE visualization market issues and challenges associated with ever expanding quantities of simulation information /data , multi-physics complexity, and the market’s desire for product customization/options along with the expanding usage of CAE and CAE visualization in the conceptual design/simulation process. In addition to an overview of these challenges, presentations will be given by 2 leading simulation visualization vendors, Visualization Sciences Group(VSG) and VCollab, providing further insights into these challenges and potential approaches for industry to address their engineering and business challenges.

VSG's Perspective (by Shawn Zhang, VSG)

Visualization's role in computer aided engineering is sometimes overlooked. By reviewing the various research topics in scientific visualization and their impacts to CAE, this presentation reestablishes visualization as a critical component to CAE, especially when discipline boundaries are frequently crossed in modern CAE practices. Elements of a common framework with open standard and unified tools are proposed as a solutions to meet ever growing CAE visualization challenges.

VCollab's Perspective (by Joe Walsh, IntrinSIM)

This presentation will explore the need to deal with large, complex and varied data structures for effective CAE visualization in a simulation environment. This presentation will also discuss the various use cases for CAE visualization and our approach to addressing the CAE challenges for a broad range of potential usage. We will discuss the importance of data reduction and a universal CAE format for visualization and integration into the simulation and business processes.
